Like many other family
businesses, ENTO started in the garage in the back yard. It came
about when Alan found himself without a job following the
closure of Meares Brothers, a Sydney based shop fitting company
of which he had been the Melbourne manager for over two years.
He had many ideas for trolleys and equipment which he had been
developing for Australian Safeway who were just getting
established in Australia. Amongst those ideas was a plan
for a turnstile mechanism which was different in its operation
to any other on the market. It was with this background that he
decided to start his own business to allow him to bring these
thoughts to fruition and so on 27th October 1966 the name ENTRO
(SALES EQUIPMENT) was put forward for registration. The first
part of the name was to relate to the turnstile and the second
to the type of general equipment being manufactured. The
registration certificate was supplied with a typing error where
the 'R' was missing, making it ENTO. Nothing was ever done to
have this corrected and the business was established with this
strange title, the spelling of which still has everyone
confused.
In the following year a
suitable factory was found in a block of six in Moorabbin and
the equipment was moved in. Since that early beginning it grew
and expanded to fill three of the six factories and there was
still never enough room let alone enough time to shift. During
this expansion Alan's son Peter joined him in January 1970 and
ten years later, the youngest member of the family, Paul also
joined.
As the business
expanded and Safeway opened stores in Sydney it became difficult
to carry out installations of the fittings being manufactured.
By then the trolley side of the business had started to become
more predominant. With the introduction of the sheet metal range
of stock trolleys into Coles Stores, and requests for trolleys
outside the supermarket trade, we gravitated towards supply of
equipment only. New designs were developed and the business
continued to grow.
After Alan retired, the
business continued to operate from Moorabbin, but with the fall
in interest rates the retirement nest-egg was shrinking. It was
then decided to take this situation and reverse it by purchasing
a factory and so invest where it would benefit everyone. And so
it was that in August 1993 the business was moved to South
Dandenong and a new era in the company's history started.
On July 1, 2001 the business
combined with B.K Group Pty Ltd in Brunswick. BK was our major
components supplier and a business we had been associated with
since before the establishment of ENTO in 1966. This is another
family business which was established in 1958 by Grahame
Kermonde at which time he was the first in Australia to produce
continuous spouting. It is currently managed by Grahame's son
and son-in-law, Lloyd Kermonde and Tony Lennie and a number of
other family members are also actively engaged in the management
and production of the business. Since then the production range
has grown to include general sheet metal, press work, metal
spinning, the manufacture of fly control equipment. Other
trading names in the BK Group and their product range are
available at the
BK Group
website.
Over the years we have tried
to keep the business small enough to remain in touch with
customers and their needs, yet large enough to be able to offer
good service at a reasonable price. With the nature of the
business these days we felt that the combination with BK Group
will ensure that we can continue to do this now and well into
the future.
Some examples of our standard
products are shown in this website, however if there is anything
else you require or you need further advice on any of the
equipment shown here, please ring, call in, email or fill out
the mail in page, and we will do what we can to help. |
